Weingut Mathern

The Mathern family got established in the wine business more than 100 years ago, in 1907.

Niederhausen, the small home village, is surrounded by steep slopes formed by volcanos million of years ago which offer best conditions for ambitious wine making.

From the late fifties on, every vintage was bottled and not sold any more by the barrel which meant to be pioneering success in these times.

Helmut Mathern, the eldest son of Oskar and Luise Mathern, entered the winery after having finished studies of viniculture at university and in the following period of time the estate became one of the top producers of Germany. Helmut Mathern had been the “Discovery of the Year 1997” by the well-known wine guide “Gault Millau” and many other awards followed within the next few years. At his sudden death in 2002, unfortunately he left his young wife Gloria, his little daughter Luisa and his little son Henning.

Gloria Mathern took over the winery and after a short period of time she is, together with her son Henning and a young ambitious team, now back on the way to produce excellent and outstanding wines. With total commitment and engagement, they take care of the steep (inclination up to 70%) vineyards around Niederhausen, a small village located at the Nahe river. It’s supposed to be the core of the best Riesling vineyards of Germany.

Henning Mathern took over the total responsibility in 2020 for the care, existence and cultivation of the vineyards. Beginning with the vintage 2021, he is the only cellar master in our winery. So, the next generation has taken over the complete production of our wines, from the start until the very end! Beside all that, Henning is completing his studies of viticulture and oenology in Geisenheim/Rhine, one of the most famous universities when it comes to wine. His experiences, which he gained in his apprenticeships in world famous (Riesling) wineries, as well as various internships at home and abroad, is of great support.

Riesling, but also other grape varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir or Cabernet Blanc, are major components of Mathern’s portfolio. Old, well-tended vines yield healthy grapes. Using stainless steel tanks the wines remain tangy and racy. While the Burgundy family impresses with smooth and very well balanced harmony in addition to little acidity, the versatility of Riesling is unsurpassed. No other grape variety reflects better its growth conditions. Soil, climate and Know-How – all that go to make up more than “humble” wines!
